Empire State University, SUNY's leading online institution, is seeking a bilingual communications specialist (State Title: Staff Assistant) to join our communications team and deliver exceptional communication strategies to our diverse audiences, while raising the institution's public profile.

As the bilingual communications specialist, you will play a pivotal role in crafting, executing, and translating communication initiatives to/for our Spanish-speaking audiences, including press releases, articles, and social media content, ensuring messaging accuracy, consistency, and cultural sensitivity.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement bilingual communication strategies to effectively reach and engage with our multicultural audience.

  • Translate documents, materials, and communications from English to Spanish and vice versa with accuracy and cultural sensitivity.

  • Create compelling content in Spanish and English for various platforms including the university's website, social media, press releases, and internal communications.

  • Collaborate with marketing, enrollment management, academic affairs, and other teams to ensure alignment of messaging and brand consistency.

  • Serve as a liaison with Spanish-speaking media outlets to enhance the university's presence and reputation.

  • Support Office of Communications activities, including commencements and conferences.

    Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, public relations, or a related field.

  • Demonstrated understanding of the needs of Spanish-speakers in the United States and beyond, including common cultural values and information consumption patterns.

  • Bilingual and biliterate in Spanish and English.

  • Excellent translation skills.

  • Experience in communications, public relations, or related field, preferably in a multicultural environment.

  • Strong understanding of cultural nuances and the ability to adapt messaging accordingly.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships and work effectively in a team environment.

  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.

  • Creativity, adaptability, attention to detail, and a passion for storytelling.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 2 years communications/public relations experience.

  • Prior knowledge of and experience working with bilingual and emergent bilingual populations.

  • Prior experience working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse linguistic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Special Information:

  • The successful candidate must complete and pass an online Spanish language proficiency test prior to an official offer of employment.

  • Some statewide travel and evening and weekend work is required.

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule during peak periods.

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.

    Additional Information:

Rank/Salary: SL2 - $57,000-$60,000, dependent upon experience and qualifications.
