Caterpillar are recruiting for a Senior Electrical Design Engineer with the ability to take a lead role in design activities.

As a Senior Electrical Design Engineer with Caterpillar you will have opportunities to:

The Senior Electrical Design Engineer will have sufficient experience to take responsibility for most special projects and delegate work to other designers, when appropriate. This involves complex designs, with associated problems for which no precedents may exist, to meet customer specifications. Working in a team of engineers, the senior electrical engineer is expected to complete most projects without supervision.

Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Interpretation of consultant drawings & specifications.

  • Review new projects with respect to commercial and design implications.

  • Prepare submittal documentation for projects and meet with customers to discuss project requirements and review submittals.

  • Design of controls and protection for generators, motors and related equipment.

  • Design of paralleling switchgear in accordance to customer specification and applicable industry standards and regulations.

  • Circuit breaker selection and busbar sizing

  • Ensure projects have appropriate controls, metering and monitoring. Controls include power meters, automation equipment (PLC/HMI), protective relays, load sharing, synchronization, etc.

  • Specification and requisition of components and services.

  • Create bill of materials.

  • The recording and control of documentation issued for manufacture.

  • Provide technical support to Manufacturing and Sales Departments.

  • Provide sketches, mark-ups and direction to Electrical and Mechanical Designers to develop project drawings. Review and approve project drawings.

  • Assist with the selection and setting of protective relays. Knowledge of digital multifunction relays, genset protection and utility interface requirements desired.

  • Receives general direction but exercises discretion as to personal work details. Plan and execute as needed to accomplish assigned individual tasks to meet expectations (cost, quality, delivery). Assumes responsibility of all assigned work.

  • Work as a member of a project team, maintain project schedule, attend project meetings, and keep electrical manager informed of status, and complete required project metrics and design documentation.

  • To participate in the training and career development of new designers.

  • Assist with product testing and/or evaluation when appropriate.

  • Represent the department in internal and external meetings.

  • Remain current in technology developments and industry standards.

  • Assist with the development and updating of procedures, design guides and instruction manuals.

  • Provide guidance and technical leadership to engineers and associate engineers.



  • A University Degree in an engineering discipline plus extensive relevant job experience, OR those with less qualifications and more relevant job experience in a senior technical supervisory role may be considered.

  • Experience in acting as lead engineer

  • Experience of electrical design and ability to interpret engineering drawings- sound technical background and a good knowledge of current engineering drawing practice.

  • Experience in the use of AutoCad, ePlan, or similar drawing packages.


  • Knowledge of electrical installation standards

  • Experience in design and / or commissioning of industrial controls, MCCs and switchboards.

  • Experience in the design/integration of complex control systems involving multiple elements

  • Experience in industrial automation (PLC, HMI, etc)
