Burns & McDonnell Regional Global Practice Manager - Transmission & Distribution (Southeast Region) in Atlanta, Georgia

This position has both regional and national responsibilities to market and manage projects. This position is responsible for the successful business, strategic development, and leadership of the Burns & McDonnell T&D Practice located in the Southeast Region serving clients throughout Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. This position will lead our Transmission & Distribution practice and will report directly to the Vice President of Operations for the Southeast Region. This position will build upon the teams located throughout our various office locations including Chattanooga, TN; Oakridge, TN; Nashville, TN; Atlanta, GA; Charlotte, NC; and Aiken, SC; to grow the practice in a dynamic and profitable manner based upon Burns & McDonnell’s core values of client satisfaction, commitment, dedication, integrity, safety, and overall outstanding service.  Specific areas of responsibility include the following, with other duties assigned by management:

  • Advocate safety in the global practice.

  • Coordinate work in the global practice which includes making assignments and reviewing performance to ensure the efficient, cost-effective utilization of staff.

  • Ensure profitable and sound growth. Achieve stated targets and standards for financial performance.

  • Attainment of sales, revenue, and net income goals for all departments/business lines within the T&D Global Practice, including meeting billability and utilization goals.

  • Partner with Human Resources to recruit, train, develop, retain, and lead performance management efforts for staff. 

  • Provide appropriate training for entry level and experienced staff.

  • Support Human Resources on educational partnerships and internship programs.

  • Interpret policies, purposes, and goals of organization to staff. 

  • Support overall Regional Office development and resource coordination between GPs.

  • Champion sales and marketing activities for T&D projects and work with the T&D sales team on strategic client development and coordination.

  • Serve as the technical advisor, provide senior-level input and evaluation on substation, transmission line, Network Integration & Automation (NIA), Distribution Modernization (DMod) and gas pipeline engineering projects.  

  • Ensure corporate and T&D quality initiatives are implemented which includes coordinating with Project Managers to assign quality control reviewers.

  • Demonstrate creativity, foresight, and mature judgment in anticipating and solving problems.

  • Determine departmental objectives and requirements and develop standards and guidelines.

  • Prepare and monitor department budget and expenditure of funds for staffing hours, supplies, training, and equipment.

  • Recommend changes in the basic structure and organization of the departments to ensure the effective fulfillment of objectives assigned to them.

  • Organize, lead, and conduct the annual performance appraisal process for T&D staff.

  • Approve timesheets for T&D employees.

  • Support the Southeast Region’s cross selling initiatives.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering or related field from an accredited program.

  • Minimum 10 years related professional experience in substation engineering design, transmission design and/or project management (Completion of master's degree in related field may be substituted for one year of experience).  

  • A professional engineering license and previous management experience with a group exceeding 10 people is required. 

  • Seller-Doer experience including leading proposals, presentations, and client meetings is a requirement. 

  • Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills; and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.

  • Position requires the ability to thoughtfully and positively influence, lead, and manage change.

  • Candidates must possess strong project management skills and a strategic perspective. 

  • Must be proficient in the use of basic computer software (i.e., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and have a working knowledge of substation programs in support of design efforts.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills in sales and business development is desirable.

  • An advanced degree is desirable. 

  • Position requires up to 25% travel.
