Description of Job
BROAD SCOPE OF POSITION:
This position reports to the Director of Outreach Programs (or designee; e.g., ASL Services Coordinator), and is responsible to provide support to students who are Deaf / hard-of-hearing and their hearing siblings, parents, CSDB staff, and community members related to activities sponsored by Outreach Programs that include or focus on the development of knowledge of ASL and bilingual (ASL/English) education.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide ASL instruction for CSDB staff, students, educators, and parents throughout Colorado and to community members, as requested, via direct (in-person) instruction and/or online technology.
Develop and lead ASL immersion activities for families and/or professionals, as well as other ASL learning opportunities, on the CSDB campus and statewide, as requested.
In collaboration with the ASL Services Coordinator and Media team, develop informational videos to be filmed and used for training and in distance learning activities.
Develop and modify curricula to support ASL instructional efforts.
Assist to expand the visibility of CSDB Outreach Programs within the Colorado Deaf Community, and the Deaf Community nationwide.
Collaborate effectively with other Outreach Programs, CSDB staff, and constituents to achieve Strategic Plan goals, and positively contribute to committee work on and off campus.
Positively serve as a team member of Outreach Programs and of the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind (CSDB) as a whole; and participate in regular team and departmental meetings and professional development activities, as required.
Perform other appropriate duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's Degree or higher in ASL / Linguistics, Teaching ASL, Deaf Studies, Education or closely related field from an accredited college or university, or documented work experience which provides an equivalent knowledge base related to ASL instruction.
Desired: Hold or be eligible for appropriate educator licensure in the State of Colorado, endorsed as a Special Education Specialist: Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing, or comparable endorsement.
Desired: American Sign Language Teachers Association (ASLTA) Certification.
Three (3) years experience teaching / working with students (in an educational environment) who are Deaf / hard-of-hearing and/or adults in ASL learning environments.
Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) at the Advanced Plus (4) skill level as demonstrated through an appropriate assessment tool and according to school policy.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
In-depth knowledge/ training in ASL education
Knowledge of and ability to assess ASL proficiency or willingness to gain training in this area
Strong knowledge of and ability to utilize English in a bilingual environment
Demonstrated knowledge of Deaf culture
Knowledge of and ability to assess and apply technology to perform the requirements of the position; ability to effectively utilize a variety of computer software applications, which may include but is not limited to e-mail, Internet, word processing, electronic calendar, presentation development, spreadsheet, database, video conferencing, etc.; willingness to stay current and develop skills as needed with or without direct support from CSDB
Knowledge of and ability to effectively adapt and apply teaching skills to a technology rich environment, which may include but is not limited to telepresence, and multiple distance education technologies and delivery modes; ability to effectively implement technology necessary to model, teach, and coordinate bilingual education support for students, parents, and professionals
Ability to communicate effectively with all audiences
Ability to respond effectively and positively to feedback
Ability to work cooperatively with others and participate effectively in a team setting
Strong, positive interpersonal and communication (group speaking) skills
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Full-Time (0.8 FTE); scheduled to work 208 days per fiscal year (July through June).
Employment is at-will, with no actual, expressed, or implied contract.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

The position of American Sign Language (ASL) Instructor is assigned to work with students, staff and others who are Deaf/hard-of-hearing and requires proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) at the Advanced Plus (4) skill level, as demonstrated through an appropriate assessment tool and according to school policy/procedures. Please check one box below to describe / indicate your current level of ASL proficiency.
SUPERIOR - Able to have a fully shared conversation, with in-depth elaboration for both social and work topics.
ADVANCED - Able to have a generally shared conversation with good, spontaneous elaboration for both social and work topics.
INTERMEDIATE - Able to discuss with some confidence routine social and work topics within a conversational format with some elaboration; generally 3-5 sentences in length.
SURVIVAL - Able to discuss basic social and work topics with responses generally 1-3 sentences in length.
NOVICE - Able to provide single sign and some short phrase/sentence responses to basic questions signed at a slow-to-moderate rate with frequent repetition and rephrasing.
NO FUNCTIONAL SKILLS - (May be) Able to provide short single sign and "primarily" fingerspelled responses to some basic questions signed at a slow rate with extensive repetition and rephrasing.
