ABOUT THIS ROLE

As a Director of Software Development you will oversee development efforts and architectural designs, guide project vision, be a product owner for development projects, and hire and develop engineering talent. In this role, you will manage a team to design, develop, test, and deploy massively scalable creator tools and services. You will work closely with product managers, engineering leaders, and leadership across the company to develop a roadmap and feature set to deliver the best possible customer experience.

You will lead an LA-based tech team in Audible's growing Creator Marketplace domain! Our customers are talented storytellers, voice actors, producers and other creators. We build innovative tools for Content Creators that are valuable, easy to use and most importantly ensure their success with customers, allowing them to focus on what they do best, while we help to bring their art to millions of customers. As a Director of Software Development, you will...

  • Complete the software development lifecycle: defining, prioritizing, designing, and leading implementation and testing of new features within an Agile environment

  • Handle all aspects of software development, including all operational metrics and support for your team’s software

  • Define, manage, and improve the software and product development processes by working closely with high-performance engineers

  • Manage the day-to-day activities of the engineering team and ensure project plans and delivery commitments are met

  • Coach and mentor our high-performing architects and engineers to help them grow their skills, enhance their knowledge of our systems and their ability to get things done, while enabling them to be future leaders who are focused on building a high growth and inclusive culture

  • Architect and develop the innovative technical design and implementation approach with the overall product line goals and objectives in mind

  • Own your team’s operational excellence, including creation of and monitoring of metrics and alarms in a continuous process improvement environment

  • Be a passionate builder of talent and teams. You will hire, coach, and mentor engineers on the team

Basic Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience working directly within engineering teams

  • Experience partnering with product OR program management teams

  • 3+ years of people management experience, managing engineers

  • 3+ years of experience architecting and designing (architecture, design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and current systems

  • Experience leading full stack development web teams

  • 5+ years experience of software development and deployment of distributed multi-tier applications

  • 3+ years experience managing agile software projects across multiple and geographically distributed teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expertise in a variety of web and SOA distributed technologies and platforms such as Java/J2EE and React

  • Experience implementing solutions leveraging AWS capabilities

  • Experience leveraging machine learning models to deliver insights and enrich customer experiences

  • Action-oriented strategic thinker

  • Be able to thrive in an ambiguous environment - where change is the only constant

  • Detail oriented to ensure that project success

  • Strong verbal and communication skills

  • Strong analytical skills and an out of the box thinker

  • Self-starter with the ability to multi-task and work in a very fast paced environment

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $148,000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $287,700/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
