Job Overview:

The Senior Director Engineering executes Engineering or Engineering (Eng) strategy to achieve key business objectives. The Senior Director Engineering’s work is guided by company strategy and Engineering (Eng) business objectives and directly impacts business results. The Senior Director Engineering evaluates key business challenges and directs the development of new and innovative solutions. This role requires in-depth knowledge of the Engineering (Eng), business, and commercial expertise to differentiate The company from the competition.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Vision/Strategy

  • Promote business ethics and values

  • Prepare KPIs for the team in line with organization goals and objectives

  • Guide ULN (Unifi Leadership Network) team members for process improvements and involvement in technical reviews

  • Participate in reviews to ensure appropriate rigor and quality of review is achieved

  • Provide leadership and direction for a multi-discipline group of Engineering departments

  • Create and foster a positive working environment that promotes teamwork within the Engineering function and all other functional areas (Sales, Estimating, Project Management, Project Controls, Manufacturing, Construction, and HR)

  • Develop business plans in line with business line objectives

  • Represent and ensure compliance with company policies and standards

  • Directs the resolution of complex or unusual business problems that cross-discipline and functional lines

  • Finance/budgets

  • Has full responsibility for Engineering overhead budgets for one or multi-office reporting to them

  • Prepare and submit budgets for business line approval

  • Approve and manage Engineering overhead budgets and forecasts

  • Develop and administer Engineering salary plans

  • Participate in Proposal gate reviews

  • Operations

  • Accountable for performance and results of multiple disciplines within engineering offices and/or departments

  • Propose scope split between MDR offices and or subcontractors (as applicable) at the bid stage and at the award

  • Assist the project teams in identifying and accessing McDermott Technical Authorities as required

  • Support the development of Proposals and Project Estimates and approve engineering schedule, work hours, and material quantity estimates

  • Keep abreast of project performance by reviewing all engineering schedules and quality performance, work hours, and material quantity estimates

  • Suggest ideas for cost-cutting and efficiency improvements

  • Provide Projects with qualified resources, processes, and tools necessary to ensure the quality, schedule, and budget performance of projects

  • Support and drive the collection of close-out reports and close-out metrics

  • People

  • Organize and monitor training and coaching of staff toward professional development

  • Evaluate performance and compensation for reports

  • Collaborate with HR on recruiting and resolution of personnel issues

  • Business Line

  • Support the continuous improvement and Lessons Learned process initiatives

  • Promote, support, and develop potential work sharing and resolve utilization opportunities with other MDR offices located worldwide

  • Evaluate new systems, tools, and technology advancements against existing design standards to improve delivery certainty and advise on suitability where applicable

  • Vision/Strategy

  • Develop business plans to achieve functional, regional, and/or global matrix objectives

  • Approve Departmental Datasheets

  • Finance/budgets

  • Monitor overhead budgets, lead quarterly budget reviews

  • Ensure departmental plans are aligned with business, financial, and operational objectives

  • Approve salary increases and promotions

  • Approve expense reports

  • Approve requisitions for other departments’ expense

  • Operations

  • Review and approve the engineering element in proposals, including cost, schedule, work hour estimates, material quantities, and execution plans (including MOPEX)

  • Attend project kick-off meetings

  • Review project engineering execution plans, including cost, schedule, work hour estimates, material quantities, and execution plans

  • Participate in Project Gate reviews

  • Monitor and drive Independent Design Reviews

  • Review schedule, quality, and budget performance on projects:

  • Attend monthly PMR’s

  • Conduct monthly Engineering reviews

  • Review Material forecasting reports

  • Review and follow up on Progress and productivity reports

  • Approve Project-specific procedures

  • Review of project close-out reports

  • Conduct periodic technical audits for compliance

  • People

  • Monitor the creation of Competency matrices

  • Conduct staff FEED Back meetings

  • Monitor the creation of and follow-up of succession plans

  • Monitor hiring strategies/recruitment effort/recruitment of juniors

  • Establish and maintain relationships with universities

  • Identify high potentials through Engineering People Meetings and 9-box Talent management

  • Monitor development and training plans, make sure PPDPs are in place for key personnel

  • Office

  • Maintain the office workload forecast (MPS) and provide input on monthly input to key proposals, scenarios, and key assignments

  • Support global and business line engineering by creating and implementing Improvement initiatives

  • Follow up on internal design competitions

  • Ensure the Lessons Learned process is followed

Reports to: Vice President of Engineering

Liaise with: Operations Manager(s), Office Leads, Functional Directors, Project Director/Manager, Clients, Authorities

Supervises: Director of Engineering, Department Managers Engineering

Essential Qualifications and Education:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering

  • 30+ years of experience in relevant industry

  • Professional registration preferred (e.g. Eur Ing, CEng, PE)

  • Participate in meetings with critical clients/vendors during the proposal and execution phases of projects

  • Flexible to take up assignments globally

  • Keen to improve the effectiveness of the work

  • Self-follow and promote others to follow to work ethical manners in the organization

  • Critically assess the balanced skilled manpower deployment on projects
