The Hertz Corporation Corporate Counsel, Real Estate in Estero, Florida

A Day in the Life:

The Corporate Counsel, Real Estate works closely with the business and functional units to support Hertz’s real estate portfolio and related initiatives. This position is full-time and based in Estero, Florida. Subject to business needs week-to-week, the position is staffed in the office Monday through Thursday and works remotely on Fridays.

The role will support the company’s financial success by providing pragmatic, business focused and risk-based legal counsel and guidance on a wide-array of matters involving the company’s locations and facilities. This role reports to the Vice President, Chief Counsel, Transactions and will support the Company’s rental car operations in North America as well as facilities procurement and construction activities.

The starting salary is 100K; commensurate with experience.

What You’ll Do:

  • Develop an in-depth understanding of Hertz’s business, real estate, and facilities, and serve as a trusted partner by providing practical, risk-based legal counsel and guidance.

  • Provide daily legal support to the company’s Real Estate and Construction teams, including advice and counsel on leasing, environmental, facilities and land use matters.

  • Structure, draft, review, and negotiate real estate leases, lease amendments, land use related agreements, construction agreements, and other documentation including coordination with business partners and other subject matter experts as needed.

  • Prepare and communicate written and oral summaries, guidance documents and operations procedures to support legal / regulatory compliance and mitigate risk.

  • Support continuous improvement of Hertz’s real estate forms and templates to ensure legal compliance.

  • Support strategic initiatives with respect to Hertz’s real estate footprint.

  • Mitigate legal and financial contractual risks, ensuring consistent terms across agreements.

  • Counsel the business on contract interpretation and lease requirements.

  • Support business colleagues in resolving pre-litigation lease disputes.

  • Enforce consistent lease execution and documentation processes, including document filing and closing.

  • Deliver business-oriented legal counsel in a timely, positive, collaborative and constructive manner.

  • Communicate effectively up, down and across the company to gather information needed by the team, and to share information as appropriate. Requires gaining a thorough knowledge of company policies, practices and people, particularly as it relates to the work of the teams supported. Also requires building and maintaining good relationships with internal and external contacts.

  • Manage outside counsel billing and other invoicing, using the Legal Department’s matter management and bill paying technology tools.

  • Be a vocal advocate and champion for Hertz’s culture of adhering to strong ethical standards.

  • Utilizes Microsoft Office Suite, matter and document management systems, Oracle, and other customary legal software tools.

  • Assist with other matters as needed.

What We’re Looking For:

  • J.D. with strong academic credentials.

  • Required to be admitted to the bar and in good standing in Florida or admitted to the bar and in good standing in another state and eligible for limited licensure of in-house counsel in Florida.

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in a law firm or corporate law department. Experience in real estate law commercial contract negotiation and management required; experience with land use, construction, and environmental law is preferred.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; able to effectively explain complex legal issues to non-lawyers.

  • A self-starter; must possess discipline to independently follow up on matters and to work flexibly in a fast-paced environment with a high level of autonomy.

  • Must be well organized, detail oriented, and able to manage numerous projects and conflicting demands in ambiguous situations.

  • Must be able to cooperatively work with management, colleagues in the legal department, internal stakeholders across multiple functions, and outside counsel.

  • Excellent critical thinking and business judgment and an ongoing curiosity about how their work fits into the bigger picture.

  • Exceptional customer service and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to read, write, and fluently speak and understand the English language.

  • Results driven, ability to make decisions and help solve problems.

  • Ability to work under minimal supervision with a goal-oriented mindset.
