What You Will Do

The Sigma Operations Group (Sigma-OPS) is seeking an energetic, customer-focused individual to join our Programmatic Operations Support team. The Research Technician will provide support to all aspects of the Programmatic Operations Support team including, but not limited to, corrective and preventative maintenance activities, chemical inventory, pressure safety, and salvage.

Sigma Division focuses on materials science and engineering, emphasizing metallurgical processes and research in support of the experimental testing program at Los Alamos. Sigma-OPS is a customer-based group that supports the programmatic operational needs of Sigma Division.

This position will be filled at either the Research Technician 4 or 5 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Research Technician 4 $69,500 - $110,300

As a Research Technician 4, you will be responsible for electrical and mechanical equipment repairs, corrective and preventative maintenance, assembly and disassembly of related equipment, and providing equipment information and specifications to the programmatic maintenance planner to populate and implement the programmatic maintenance program. You will work from maintenance manuals and/or diagrams to troubleshoot and maintain various maintenance systems.

Research Technician 5 $83,900 - $136,600

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level you will be expected to initiate, conduct, lead, maintain, and/or complete maintenance on programmatic equipment. You will be expected to take lead as a primary or secondary point of contact in supporting programs regarding programmatic equipment, operations, and/or maintenance.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to interact with all levels of personnel and customers. Ability to follow work instructions.

  • Ability to follow safeguards and security procedures in accordance with Laboratory policy.

  • Demonstrated experience with working to a set of defined requirements and regulations (e.g. chemical management and pressure safety policies).

  • Ability to work in a highly regulated, safety, Integrated Work Document (IWD) and checklist environments.

  • Demonstrated experience executing job responsibilities with minimal supervision.

  • Demonstrated experience with maintenance of electrical and mechanical systems.

  • Proficient computer skills with common applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

  • Ability to obtain a Q-clearance which typically requires US citizenship.

Additional Job Requirements for Research Technician 5:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Ability to champion or lead initiatives related to maintenance.

  • Ability to mentor colleagues with less maintenance experience.

  • Ability to accurately document maintenance work in approved systems of record such as; Computerized Maintenance Management Software (CMMS) and Enterprise Asset Management Systems (EAM)

  • Demonstrated knowledge in supporting maintenance programs such as; metrology, waste management, and safety.

Research Technician 4 Education/Experience: Position requires an Associate's Degree and 5 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Research Technician 5 Education/Experience: Position requires an Associate's Degree and 7 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

Demonstrated knowledge/experience performing corrective, predictive, and preventative maintenance.

  • Experience working with data entry in regards to basic maintenance input.

  • Familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).

  • Moderate knowledge of tools and supporting equipment.

  • Active DOE Q clearance.

  • Experience working to a schedule and preventative maintenance plans.

  • Experience with CNC Machine Maintenance.

Work Environment

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 (https://www.directives.doe.gov/directives-documents/400-series/0472.2-BOrder-chg1-pgchg) for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
