The Product Support and Logistics Division (PSLD) is one of the most innovative divisions within Caterpillar. In PSLD, as within all of Caterpillar, our priority is our customers and helping them build a better world. We touch nearly every element of the services value stream from procurement to design and manufacturing to distribution. PSLD is responsible for Aftermarket Parts Distribution of Cat Parts, Integrated Logistics, segment Procurement and the design and manufacture of Wear Components (Undercarriage and GET) and Maintenance Components (Seals, Tubes & Hardware, Hose & Couplings, Fluids and Filters).

Job Summary

Caterpillar’s Product Support and Logistics Division is looking for a Rubber Material Development Engineer in its Mossville, IL Facility. In this role you will have an opportunity to work with a high-performing team of chemists, material scientists and engineers in the design and development of innovative new product technologies for rubber and sealing products. This person would have responsibility for researching, evaluating, and implementing new compound and materials technologies.

What You Will Do

  • Supports product development efforts for rubber components and sealing products.

  • Responsible for formulating and compounding of rubber compounds; support product development efforts for rubber components and sealing products.

  • Improve existing formulations by researching and implementing new processing methods or new chemicals.

  • Direct technicians in testing on new formulations of elastomeric materials to determine physical properties using all available resources, internally and externally.

  • Write technical reports that detail methods and findings. Keep extremely accurate and detailed records of research activities and results.

  • Interface with external suppliers to support production and acquire needed chemicals, or to discuss formulary ideas and questions.

  • Provide assistance to the manufacturing facilities includes providing specifications, revisions, replacement materials, waste reduction, production efficiency measures and equipment modifications.

  • Maintain and/or further develop relationships with other relevant industry polymer, additive and/or equipment suppliers to further develop “win/win” situations.

What you have

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Materials Science, Plastic Engineering, Rubber Engineering,Engineering or Engineering Technology

  • Analytical Thinking: Knowledge of techniques and tools that promote effective analysis; ability to determine the root cause of organizational problems and create alternative solutions that resolve these problems

  • Decision Making and Critical Thinking: Knowledge of the decision-making process and associated tools and techniques; ability to accurately analyze situations and reach productive decisions based on informed judgment

  • Effective Communications: Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors

  • Technical Excellence: Knowledge of a given technology and various application methods; ability to develop and provide solutions to significant technical challenges

  • Project Management: Knowledge of effective project management strategies and tactics; ability to plan, organize, monitor, and control projects, ensuring efficient utilization of technical and administrative resources to achieve project objectives

Top candidates will also have

  • Working knowledge of all chemicals related to rubber and rubber vulcanization

  • Understanding of molding and curing of rubber and sealing components
