E&T Power System Certification Engineer

Description

As an Engineering Specialist at Caterpillar, you will work with product teams across the Innovation and Technology Development Division (ITDD) and Global Power Solutions Division (GPSD) to meet global regulatory and certification requirements for hybrid energy systems. You will translate standards and lead product teams to meet regulatory and commercial requirements for hybrid systems markets globally. You will be responsible for continually learning and staying abreast of regulations and standards. This role will serve as a mentor and coach to enterprise team members and assist them on meeting these standards. Candidates need to have a proven history of dealing with standards and regulatory bodies and taking product through certifications.

Responsibilities

  • This position collaborates with design teams, product safety and regulatory compliance teams, product application groups and regulatory / standards organizations to drive effective design solutions that address regulatory and certification requirements.

  • Gather standards and certification requirements and provide translation to internal teams

  • Liaison with societies such as UL, ABS and DNV for certifying hybrid energy and control systems

  • Prepare documentation with the help of cross functional team on processes, design, controls hardware and software, and ensure traceability

  • Incumbent will keep up-to-date with changing commercial and regulatory compliance requirements and technology and developing increased technical breadth and/or depth in hybrid and control systems

  • Success factors for this role include strong communication skills with the ability to quickly and effectively resolve conflict to reach consensus on subjective subject matter, with an understanding of various customer, client, industry and standards/certification needs

  • Complete product and systems certification projects on time, at /under cost

  • Keep abreast of new technologies and upcoming standards and revisions

  • Participate in future industry standards developing organizations longer term

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in an accredited institution

  • 9 years of progressive experience in an engineering background

  • Experience in product / system design, development or validation.

  • Understanding of company policies and procedures related to engineering product development, engineering maintenance, and product certification.

  • Experience interpreting standards (IEEE, UL, IEC, CE, ABS, DNV, etc.) and dealing with societies for certification of product.

  • Travel for this position will be from 10%

Top Candidates will also have:

  • Understanding of hybrid / microgrid systems including generator-sets, energy storage systems, inverters, UPS, ATS, control systems for power generation equipment, etc. and how these components and sub-systems work together.

  • Experience in interfacing with regulatory and standards organizations such as Underwriters Laboratory (UL), American Bureau of Shipping (ABS, Det Norske Veritas (DNV), etc.

  • Experience in teams performing safety related risk assessments and control system functional safety (e.g. FMEA), as well as safety audits

  • Experience with Safety Integrity Level (SIL) certification for software

  • Excellent analytical skills

  • Strong communication skills

  • Strong leadership abilities

  • Program/project management skills

  • Self-starter with strong technical leadership skills
