E&T Power System Engineering Specialist (Offshore Drilling Lead Engineer)

Description

As an Engineering Specialist at Caterpillar, you will work with product teams across the Innovation and Technology Development Division (ITDD), and Global Power Solutions Division (GPSD) to meet global commercial, regulatory and certification requirements for hybrid energy systems for offshore drilling applications. You will work with product definition personnel at Cat Oil & Gas Group and translate their functional requirements into technical specifications. You will translate relevant marine and offshore standards (ABS, DNV, etc.), lead product teams to meet regulatory and commercial requirements and introduce hybrid systems to offshore drilling markets globally. You will be responsible for continually learning and staying abreast of latest hybrid systems technologies, regulations and standards. Candidates need to have a proven history of taking product through Caterpillar New Product Introduction (NPI) Process.

Responsibilities

  • This position collaborates with design teams at ITDD, Cat Oil & Gas Product Group, and regulatory / standards organizations to drive effective design solutions that address commercial, customer, regulatory and certification requirements for offshore drilling market.

  • Gather functional specifications from Cat Oil & Gas Product Group product definition personnel and customers and translate these into technical specifications.

  • Ensure product meets quality, reliability, durability, and performance targets set by NPI team.

  • Complete product and systems development, certification and introduction on time, and at /under cost

  • Success factors for this role include strong communication skills with the ability to quickly and effectively resolve conflict to reach consensus on subjective subject matter, with an understanding of various customer, client, industry and standards/certification needs.

  • Incumbent will keep up-to-date with changing commercial and regulatory compliance requirements and technology and developing increased technical breadth and/or depth in hybrid systems

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in an accredited Engineering curriculum

  • 9 years of progressive experience in an engineering background

  • Experience in product / system design, development, testing and validation

  • Understanding of company policies and procedures related to engineering product development, engineering maintenance, and product certification.

  • Experience interpreting standards (Example: ABS, DNV, IEEE, UL, IEC, CE, etc.) and incorporating such requirements into product design.

  • Experience developing control system architecture based on customer / market needs.

  • Travel for this position will be from 10% to 25%

Top Candidates will also have:

  • Understanding of hybrid / microgrid systems including engine-generator-sets, energy storage systems, inverters, transfer switches, control systems, etc. and how these components and sub-systems work together to provide hybrid energy solutions to customers.

  • Demonstrated success in interfacing with regulatory and standards organizations such as Underwriters Laboratory (UL), American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), Det Norske Veritas (DNV), etc.

  • Engineering skills include good understanding of electrical, mechanical and control systems for Oil & Gas industry.

  • Experience in systems integration in the Marine and Oil & Gas Industries

  • Experience working with 3rdparty applications to define requirements and interfaces.

  • Experience in performing safety related risk assessments and control system functional safety (e.g. FMEA), as well as safety audits

  • Experience leading engineering team

  • Excellent analytical skills

  • Strong communication skills

  • Self-starter with strong technical leadership skills

  • 6 Sigma Black Belt

  • Master’s degree in an accredited Engineering curriculum

  • Program/project management skills
