Actalent Entry-level Civil Engineer in Naperville, Illinois
Description:
Model Builder (then eventually Planner) works with New Business Inquiries that come in to add gas service to a variety of sites (residential, commercial, industrial, etc.)
Using Microsoft Excel to work through millions of rows of data and querying tables
Model Builder Goals: being able to confidently convey ideas for project quantities, installations. For example, suggestions will sound like "if we make this investment now, this will improve the future in X way"
Weighing the pros and cons of any proposed improvements. Going through different options and what they anticipate the outcomes will be (trying to build efficiencies)
Candidate will review data for 30+ inquiries each week, identify data for new customers coming online, evaluate project load for inquiries based on uploaded information
Experience in database and script writing skills as they will be using millions or rows of data that the analysis team builds off of
Build models using millions of lines of data to present and share with planning team (they take that information to build out the analysis and simulations to present to executives, engineers and construction teams)
Very hands-on analysis done on a team of engineers & GIS personnel
Pay very close attention to detail by ensuring new business aligns to design standards and materials
Work throughout life cycle of each inquiry with other business units and system planning team
Make recommendations based on models and simulations
Utilize MS Office (Access, Word, PowerPoint) to present findings to executives and design engineers
Identify the most cost-effective, efficient simulation to present and convince decision makers to invest in candidate's top choice for a path forward for this new service inquiry
Learn and get comfortable within the systems and software (0-3 months)
Run models with excel and start to analyze and present to planning partners (3-6 months)
Additional Skills & Qualifications:
1-2 internships up to three years of experience (ideal is entry-level with two, relevant internships)
ABET Accredited, Bachelor of Science in Civil, Mechanical or Industrial
Ability to read and interpret engineering plans
MS Excel/Word/PowerPoint - intermediate proficiency
Public Speaking / Presentation Skills
Strong will to stand behind and communicate their ideas
Ability to ask questions and ask for feedback
Teamwork focused - able to work with other collaboratively and communicate / update partners on project status without being prompted to
