Vanderbilt University Research Assistant, Molecular Physiology and Biophysics in Nashville, Tennessee
Under moderate supervision, set up, conduct experiments, and continue research projects following protocols including the appropriate recording of data and reporting of standard or variant results. Assist in other laboratory and research functions.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Under moderate supervision, conduct and evaluate experiments and assays
Understand and follow experimental protocols (may include animal handling, tissue culture, etc.)
Proficient or willing to learn mouse husbandry, maintenance, and experiments
Proficient in basic cell culture techniques such as cell line transfection methods and lentiviral propagation/isolation methods
Provide appropriate documentation of all experiments and maintain an electronic lab notebook
Record, compile, interpret, and communicate data/results to supervisor
Summarize test results appropriately
Prepare preliminary research progress reports
Follow responsible data management and sharing practices
Create or maintain electronic versions of all lab SOPs
Maintain lab inventories (chemicals, resources, reagents, office supplies) and prepare spreadsheets of all lab supplies, reagents, resources, etc.
Follow University safety protocols (may include use of combustibles, radioactivity, toxic material, and/or carcinogens)
Perform calculations involving molarity, % solutions, and serial dilutions
Prepare reagents
Prepare, operate and troubleshoot equipment in experimental procedures
Read and follow all equipment manuals
Maintain and repair equipment according to manufacturer and University guidelines
Ensure laboratory is prepared for experiments
Maintain sterile conditions as required
Demonstrate an understanding of acceptable procedures and techniques
Recognize problems and suggest solutions
Assist in modifications as directed
Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience required
Strong communication, organizational, and data management skills, positive and respectful attitude, dependability, and desire to be part of a growing team that participates in multidisciplinary collaborations with other lab groups
Experience or willingness to work with laboratory animal models
Experience with some of the following techniques: bioinformatics, RNA/DNA extraction, PCR, Western blotting, sterile cell culture, bulk and/or single cell sequencing, fluorescent microscopy, ELISAs preferred
Experience working with animal models of disease preferred

Chemicals and gasses; medications, cleaning chemicals, oxygen, other medical gases used in work area
Pathogens: risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other contagious illnesses
