Microsoft Corporation Senior Research Software Engineer in Redmond, Washington

We are hiring a Senior Research Software Engineer. The Microsoft Applied Sciences Group incubates disruptive technologies for Microsoft’s next-gen Windows and Device products and is working on several exciting projects that will shape how computers and other devices perceive the user and the user’s environment. Operating as a startup within the company, this team works closely with several research and product teams to bring compelling new experiences to the market.

The Applied Sciences Group is growing, and we have an exciting opportunity for a talented Senior Research Software Engineer to contribute to the code for the next generation devices and operating system. This is a hands-on role that will provide collaboration opportunities throughout the organization. You will be working on innovative products that are used by millions of users around the world.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with researchers and product teams throughout the organization.

• Design, build, test, debug, and ship high quality features.

• Apply knowledge of debugging tools, logs, telemetry, and other methods to proactively flag issues.

• Conduct retrospective debugging of solutions to identify root causes of problems.

• Assist with technical validation efforts.

• Learn to contribute to efforts to integrate instrumentation for gathering telemetry data on system behavior such as performance, reliability, availability, usage, and safety mechanisms.

• Collaborate with other teams to manage dependencies, jointly deliver updates, and continuously improve engineering capabilities.

• Use engineering best practices throughout the software development lifecycle.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Pythono OR equivalent experience.

Additional or Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.

  • Knowledge of machine learning and deep learning frameworks such as ONNX and onnxruntime

  • Experience with debugging tools such as WinDbg and familiarity with crash dump analysis.

  • Understanding of Windows Error Reporting.

  • Knowledge of Windows internals.

  • Proven collaborator, attentive to details, keen to learn, thriving on ambiguity.

  • Practical experience working in a highly performant team in an academic or industrial research environment.Experience with multi-threading.

Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $112,000 - $218,400 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $145,800 - $238,600 per year.
