Job Summary

Head Lifeguards are responsible for the supervision of all ESLC lifeguard staff during

their shift, daily operations during recreational swimming hours, and all other

scheduled events in the ESLC pool area.

Campus Recreation Services is located at the George S. Eccles Student Life Center, which connects student Life with academic life to create an engaged campus community. Amenities include a 50-meter pool, indoor and outdoor leisure pools, large indoor hot tub/spa, 320-yard indoor running track, bouldering and 4-story climbing wall, 5 sport courts, racquetball courts, 4 group fitness studios, and a combative room. Additional amenities include a branch of the U First Credit Union, Shake Smart, four sand volleyball courts and an outdoor basketball court.

Student Affairsis comprised of nearly 20 departments and is focused on supporting student well-being and success with the ultimate goal of assisting students in discovering their passion, people, and purpose. In order to best support our students, it is important that staff stay aware of issues and best practices related to student development, identity, and sense of belonging, both locally and nationally.

This position is work study eligible, but work study is not required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide operational supervision and coordination to ensure a safe environment for both staff and members.

  • Secure pool facility upon opening and closing and ensure all procedures are completed

  • Complete records and reports

  • Responsible for ensuring that all lifeguard positions are filled during their shift

  • Report equipment, supplies, safety, and maintenance needs to Program Manager

  • Prepare pool facilities for scheduled activities

  • Maintain courteous relations with all participants and insist that all swimmer conduct is suitable for a safe pool atmosphere

  • Understand Campus Recreation Services policies relating to the pool and answer all questions courteously and correctly

  • Respond to and follow all appropriate emergency procedures

  • Attend all head guard meetings and participate in leadership development activities

  • Assist in planning and implementing in-service trainings

  • Assist in leading recertification trainings

  • Supervise lifeguard staff while on duty and enforce staff policies

  • Maintain weekly shifts (cannot be a sub guard)

  • Assist in covering shifts as needed

  • Maintain current certifications and physical fitness in order to perform rescue skills

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently employed with CRS for at least 1 semester

  • Previous lifeguard experience at the Crimson Lagoon

  • Awareness of safety concerns and risk management

  • Ability to provide positive customer service

  • Awareness of, and appreciation for, individual uniqueness and diversity

  • Ability to supervise student staff and/or participants

  • Have a current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification

  • Ability to work two consecutive semesters upon promotion

Head lifeguards are not chosen according to seniority. Rather the decision is based

on job competence, responsibility, and demonstrated leadership ability.
