As a Logistics Manager at the Sanford, NC campus you will manage a medium-sized logistics center across multiple buildings to ensure an efficient, high degree of internal customer satisfaction.Internal customers are: Operations with (2) Main Assembly lines, (20 ) Subassembly areas and (1) Paint Line; Fabrications with (3) Main Fabrication lines; and, Morton Parts Worldwide Distribution Centers with (1) Dealer Kitting and shipping area.

You will report to the site Supply Chain Manager, have approximately 10 direct reports (consisting of Section Managers, Group Managers, Black Belts and various levels of Logistics support personnel).Your organization will total around 200 personnel depending on production volume.

Your primary responsibilities will be meeting internal customer needs, managing internal customer relationships, and achieving profitability objectives for the various internal customer accounts while providing leadership focused on a positive work culture.

You will own and set the overall direction for the value streams you lead with overall responsibility for People (safety and engagement), Quality, Velocity & Cost (PQVC) performance of those value streams including MQ12005 certification (based on ISO 9001:2015) and Caterpillar Production System (CPS) Assessment scores.

You will analyze burden and efficiency data to isolate problems and improve performance and costs.Performs on-going evaluation of workloads and assists Section Managers in solving problems related to quality, work effort, cost drivers and general overall attitudes.

This position will be responsible for a three-shift operation across the Caterpillar Inc campus located in Sanford, NC.Coordination of material, equipment, manpower and quality rests with this position as well as meeting schedule requirements. Work direction, problem solving and coordination with support departments is a major responsibility. Determining budget requirements, cost savings projects, forecasting production needs and ensuring quality standards are maintained rests with this position.

Principle Activities include:

  • Monitors customer delivery performance, cost reduction programs, lead-time improvements, and quality improvement projects that will enhance customer value and business unit results.

  • Establishes cost and quality goals and ensures the efficient integration of factory, logistics, maintenance and quality to achieve targets for assigned area.

  • Ensures proper direction and supervision of activities in assigned area to maintain effective utilization of personnel and machinery.

  • Determines needs and coordinates actions required to maintain standards of efficiency, quality and safety in area supervised.

  • Implement various corporate initiatives such as 5S, Lean Manufacturing, 6 Sigma, Internal Certification, Caterpillar Production System (CPS), etc.

  • Promotes development of people through continued education, employee involvement, increased responsibility and ergonomics. Trains new supervisors on manufacturing quality. Sets goals and assists team in meeting quality goals/standards.

  • Manage all logistics operations to ensure build schedule and financial targets (costs, budgets, variable margin and operating profit after capital charge - OPACC) are achieved.

  • Responsible for processes which include but are not limited to receiving, storage, kitting, order filling, packing, shipping, quality control, inventory counts, returns and related functions to provide shipping and receiving accuracy and inventory.

  • Developing and implementing operations changes to reduce costs and/or improve efficiency.

  • Working with HR manager, when appropriate, to recruit, select, develop and train staff.

  • Promoting/supporting day to-day operational and safety issues with support of management team.

  • Preparing budget and objectives and various reports, attending appropriate meetings, building a relationship with the internal customers and the community.

  • Providing direction and guidance for continuous quality improvements, operational changes to reduce costs and/or improving efficiency utilizing 6 Sigma methodology and resources.

  • Developing and managing within the annual Business Plan to meet internal customer needs and satisfaction, ensuring contractual performance standards are met and financial targets including Sales, Profit, Availability and ROA are achieved

  • Leading teams to achieve specific objectives related to customer service/ inventory management - such as improving inventory turns by a specific amount, improving the time to process client's customer emergency orders, or improving misses per unit (MPU).

  • Participating in strategy development to improve inventory management key metrics – service, inventory performance, and backorder levels.

  • Identifying system and process gaps and work with business partners to develop solutions to achieve goals or enhance network efficiency.


Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree

  • Minimum 6 years of progressively responsible operations, manufacturing, logistics or supply chain job experience.

  • Previous supervisory experience

Top Candidates Will Also Have:

  • Good human relations and communications (oral and written) skills, and ability to make independent decisions with little direct supervision.

  • Bachelor’s degree preferably in Supply Chain Management, Logistics Management or Engineering

  • APICS CPIM or CSPC certification highly desired.

  • Previous Black Belt experience

  • Significant knowledge of computer systems (Examples: SAP SPM, SAS, Glovia (G2), Terradata, Simeo, Excel, Power BI and/or Tableau)

  • Experience in information technology, supply chain logistics, global purchasing, operations and/or quality.

  • Experience in plant scheduling, forecasting, demand planning, inventory management and control, logistics planning, or material requirements planning.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal, teamwork, communication and leadership skills.

  • Capable of working and communicating with a variety of company (all levels) and supplier personnel.

  • Knowledge and understanding of 6 Sigma Project Management principles.

  • Self-motivated and able to adapt to changing priorities
