HORSTMAN

Horstman is a developer of suspension systems for both the defense and commercial markets. Horstman has a pedigree of developing innovative suspension solutions for both tracked and wheeled vehicles since the 1920's. Horstman is looking for driven, technical engineers, interested in helping Horstman stay at the forefront of suspension technology for the next 100 years.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:

Perform design engineering on vehicle suspension components and systems for defense and commercial product lines. The Design Engineer role is a Non-supervisory role preparing; CAD solid models and 2D drawings, calculations for component tolerances and fits, and overall preparation of technical data packages. Design new, modified, and/or improved components and kits for applications in accordance with engineering standards & project scope of work. Position will require working closely with manufacturing and component suppliers to optimize designs for wide variety of applications.

PRIMARY FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Create and maintain 3D models using Solidworks

  • Create and maintain manufacturing drawings using Solidworks

  • Implement GD&T when necessary on manufacturing drawings

  • Perform GD&T stack up calculations

  • Manage configuration control of TDP with PDM Software

  • Perform feasibility studies on potential projects with multiple suspension configurations.

  • Select appropriate material based off service requirements

  • Design manufacturing fixtures, test stands, and specialized tooling.

  • Structure and enter Bills of Materials into ERP system

  • Manage file structure within Solidworks PDM

  • Follow workflow process to release parts and drawings to manufacturing

  • Process ECR's and associated documentation

  • Work closely with customer, including occasionally presenting to the customer

  • Work closely with Project Engineering staff to develop new designs

  • Communicate complex concepts, both written and verbal to co-workers, customers, and suppliers.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering or other related degree

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a design/manufacturing environment

  • Excellent computer skills including but not limited to all MS Office products

  • Must be energetic, highly motivated, self-starting individual, with a strong capability for self-learning and driven to complete projects.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Have a design experience working with the following materials: Stainless Steels, Tool Steels, Titanium, Aluminums)

  • Design experience with hydraulic power units and associated tubing, hose, and fitting styles associated with hydraulic systems.

  • Past work experience in the defense industry

  • Significant suspension design experience with on/off-road wheeled & tracked vehicles

Position Requirements

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet, although the individual can be exposed to loud noise situations occasionally.

The employee is occasionally required to stand; sit; use hands, handle, or feel; climb or balance; and stoop; kneel; crouch; or crawl. Employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and depth perception.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS AND PERSONAL PROTECTION REQUIREMENTS:

Occasionally required to wear safety helmets, safety shoes and safety glasses.
