The Orthopedic PA is a critical member of the orthopedic surgery team at Howard University Hospital, a teaching hospital, and a Level 1 Trauma Center. This position involves providing direct patient care in a high-volume setting, assisting in surgical procedures, and participating in the training of medical students and residents. The Orthopedic PA will work collaboratively with supervising orthopedic surgeons, nursing staff, and other healthcare professionals to deliver the highest standard of care to patients with acute and chronic musculoskeletal issues. The Orthopedic PA: Conduct comprehensive and problem-focused histories and physical examinations. Diagnose and treat orthopedic conditions in both the emergency and clinic settings. Order and interpret diagnostic tests such as X-rays, MRI, and CT scans. Assist in surgical procedures, providing aid in exposure, hemostasis, and other intraoperative technical functions that help surgeons carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. Manage pre-operative and post-operative care, including wound management and postoperative follow-up in the clinic and hospital settings. Participate actively in the trauma team when orthopedic injuries are involved, providing urgent care and stabilization. Instruct and supervise medical students and residents on orthopedic rotation, sharing practical knowledge and clinical skills. Maintain accurate and detailed medical records, documenting all patient interactions, treatments, and procedures according to hospital policy, legal requirements, and Howard University Hospital medical staff bylaws. Work closely with other medical and surgical specialties to coordinate and optimize patient care. Participate in quality improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing patient outcomes and optimizing orthopedic service efficiency. Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are related and appropriate to the position and area. Maintains confidentiality of patients, families, and staff. Minimum Requirements Include: Master’s degree as a Physician Assistant from an accredited institution. Previous experience in orthopedics is highly preferred, especially in a trauma center. Certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
